Apple AirPlay private key exposed, released

Enterprising software developer James Laird was looking to stream music without AirPlay. Since an appropriate AirPort Express emulator did not exist, Laird reverse-engineered the Airport Express private key and published an open source AirPort Express emulator called ShairPort as a result.

What does that mean? A commenter on Hacker News spells it out clearly:

Previously you could do this:
iTunes -- stream to --> Apple Airport Express
3rd party software -- stream to --> Apple Airport Express

Now you can do this:
iTunes -- stream to --> 3rd party software/hardware

Laird has thrown the door open for software solutions. Now, you can stream music between Macs, to appropriately-configured consoles (like an Xbox), etc. ShairPort is built in Perl and C. Have fun, folks.

Rumor: Apple no longer allows Best Buy to sell the iPad 2 [Updated]

Update: Boy Genius Report has independently confirmed that at least two retail employees at at least two Best Buy stores were told not to sell iPad 2s by managers on Thursday. Additionally, a store spokesperson told BRG that " Our stores have been asked to temporarily hold non-reserved iPad 2 inventory for an upcoming promotion."
File under "Interesting if true": A reader tipped us to say that Apple has ordered a freeze on sales of the iPad 2 through Best Buy.
He claims that until further notice, the mammoth electronics retailer has had all stock except demo units pulled. We didn't put much credence in this rumor until CrunchGear reported the same thing after being tipped by a supposed Best Buy employee; Apple has supposedly banned Best Buy from selling the iPad 2 for the time being.
According to CrunchGear, this doesn't have anything to do with Best Buy thumbing its nose at the iPad via a recent ad. Instead, CrunchGear says its tipster claimed Best Buy set an artificial daily quota of sales for the iPad 2 and told customers it was out of stock when it did, in fact, still have stock remaining. It's rumored that Apple's Tim Cook got wind of this chicanery, and Apple isn't happy about it at all.
We haven't received confirmation of any of this yet, so it's all just a big rumory rumor for now. But if anyone happens to go into a Best Buy tomorrow and finds no iPad 2s available anywhere, it may be that the worldwide shortage of Apple's newest gadget isn't to blame, for once.

Time Warner goes to court over iPad streaming app

And they're off! I thought it was weird that Time Warner was pushing so hard to get streaming cable channels on its new iPad app, but apparently it's ready to back up that stance. The company has just dropped a request for a declaratory judgement on a US District Court, asking the courts to rule on whether it can or can't show cable subscription channels on the iPad. There's more information on the official blog: Time Warner's current interpretation is that the iPad is just like any other TV screen in the house, and since you can already stream Time Warner's content to multiple TVs, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to stream it off to your iPad if you want as well. Sounds reasonable to us, but Time Warner has officially asked the courts for agreement.
As Time Warner says itself, this request wouldn't have been filed if it had any inclination it was wrong. Essentially, it's for the providers who have been fighting to keep their content off of TW's app -- if Time Warner gets the ruling it wants, those companies won't have a proverbial leg to stand on. Time Warner says that a resolution should be out soon, and when it is, we'll likely see Time Warner's customers get those channels back that were lost before.

Atari releases over 100 Greatest Hits to the App Store

Atari is borrowing a playbook page from Capcom -- it's released an app called Atari's Greatest Hits on the New Zealand App Store, which should be here in the US by tomorrow. Like Capcom's Arcade app, Atari's new title features a ton of retro arcade hits (more than 100), all available via in-app purchase for unlimited play. Touch Arcade has the full, overwhelming list, and you can see everything in there from Asteroid to Yar's Revenge and all of it in between. Missile Command! Breakout! Centipede! This is basically a retro gaming fan's dream come true.
The way it works is that each of the in-game packs sell for 99 cents, but you can get the whole shebang for just $14.99 (and 15 bucks for all of these titles is a bargain). The app is universal, too, which means not only will it work on the iPhone, but it'll also run all of these games on the iPad -- even nicer if you have the iPad set up in ThinkGeek's soon-to-be-released iCade arcade cabinet. In fact, Atari worked with ION to make these games specifically compatible with just this device, so for an iPad, this game pack and the price of the $99 iCade, you can take a trip through time right back to the video game palaces of old.
